What can I expect from these poetry quick write prompts?

Each prompt comes with a mentor text. The mentor texts are either complete poems or excerpts from larger poems. Accompanying the mentor text is an invitation to imitate or an invitation to write what comes to mind. Students are invited to imitate the following moves:

  • Simile
  • Metaphor
  • Onomatopoeia
  • Alliteration
  • Personification
  • Repetition
  • Hyperbole
  • Paradox

How do you use quick writes?

Quick writes are intended to be short, low-pressure sprints in writing.

  • Set a timer for 5-10 minutes, read the prompt, and give the students time to write in their journals.
  • Don’t be afraid to write alongside them!

At the end of the quick write session, invite students to discuss or share their thinking.

Quick Writes increase writing fluency and decrease student anxiety.

Bonus! Quick Writes also give students a notebook FULL of “seeds” to use for a later, more developed piece of writing.

There are 30 prompts included!

There is no additional prep work required. The beauty of this purchase is that I’ve made it easy to present the slides and go – saving you valuable planning and grading time! The slides ARE editable, so you may tweak the prompts for your students if needed.
