⭐ Teaching Slides – Introduce the story, give background information on the historical context & meaning of the title, then guide your students through a successful first read.

⭐ Plot Diagram – Can your students identify each significant event on the plot diagram for Lamb to the Slaughter?

⭐ Character Transformation — In an activity similar to a character autopsy, students will analyze Mary Maloney at the beginning and end of the short story.

⭐ Character Pies — As an alternative to the activity above, students will analyze Mary and Patrick’s character traits using pie charts. This activity is similar to a blame chart!

⭐ Then vs. Now Comparison – Give students an opportunity to look closely at the story and pull out setting details that showcase life in the 1940s-1950s. Then, have them compare those events to contemporary times.

⭐ Irony Scavenger Hunt – Students will take a closer look at Roald Dahl’s masterful use of all three types of literary irony in Lamb to the Slaughter by identifying examples of verbal, situational, and dramatic irony in the short story.

⭐ Wanted Poster – Have students create a WANTED poster for Mary Maloney.
