Reading Genres Activities – Genre Worksheets for Gifted Students or Higher Level Thinking

Spice up your genre activities for your gifted upper elementary and early middle school students with these higher-level genre worksheets! Designed for students already familiar with reading genre basics, these engaging extension activities will take their thinking to the next level. Encourage creativity and critical thinking as students explore the characteristics of each genre in unique ways.

Through these engaging genre activities, your students will showcase their genre knowledge and sharpen their analytical skills as they explore genres through two challenging tasks.

► Plotting Genres

With these genre worksheets, students will evaluate various book genres based on their characteristics. They must consider the criteria on the x- and y-axes (imaginary vs. factual, action-packed vs. uneventful, etc.). Then, they will plot each genre on the graph according to how well it aligns with the criteria.

This is a very subjective activity, and discourse is strongly encouraged. If you can get kids to debate whether fantasy or science fiction is overrated or underestimated, you’re winning!

► Genre Meets Genre

In this genre activity, students will personify two genres and write a creative short story about their encounter. Through their chance encounter, students must accurately portray their genres according to their common characteristics.

I recommend using these genre worksheets to challenge your higher-level students during your larger genre unit. They are easy to plug in as a station rotation or use in lieu of another genre activity!
